Wind Power and Water Power:

So Happy Partner Together

Wind power is known of many fine attributes as a power source, but steady predictability is not one of them. Water power, on the other hand, is often highly controllable. Proponents of wind in the Northwest say it is a match made in heaven, and here is the article.

As the article states, wind is a good source of energy if you have a relatively constant flow of wind and an alternative source of energy to bolster wind power when the wind producing the energy necessary to support users, especially at times of peak use.
What I find interesting about the global warming and renewable energy debate is that environmentalists and others tout that we need to reduce carbon emissions and invest in renewables. Yet these same groups have problems with every current form of energy, renewable or non-renewable.
Wind: Migrating birds will fly into the windmills - Problem for wildlife lovers.
Hydroelectric: Mega-dams are filling some of our countries most pristine places and harming salmon – Problem for wilderness and fish lovers.
Nuclear: By far the cleanest source of energy in terms of emissions, but no one wants to store its byproduct, nuclear waste – Problem for most residents in the west and many enviros.
The list goes on and on. There is no good solution that everyone can get on board with. But a good place to start is by charging consumers of energy, both renewable and non-renewable, the actual price for their consumption. If the goal is to cut down of auto emissions than gov’t should stop subsidizing gas.

Is there ever an idea everyone is happy with? In the end, what really matters is making the most people happy with the policies that are made, and not destroying our planet in the process. What will happen to business and travel and such if the government were to stop subsidizing gas? Do the positives outweigh the negatives done to society? From my point of view, I'm not sure that would be such a good idea. Instead, maybe the government should gradually start decreasing subsidies so the population isn't shocked by the change.
