Lake Powell

Over the years, many individuals have been petitioning for the reclamation of Glen Canyon from the hands of the jet set house boat owners.

I visited the area to kayak last week and was informed of the lakes' retreating water levels. If current precipitation and water runoff continues to decrease as it has over the last 5 years, it appears that nature will reclaim Glen Canyon all on its own.

The simple fact about Glen Canyon dam is that it is not going anywhere. Dams like Hoover and Glen make living in the West possible. They also provide Upper basin states, which are required to provide the Lower basin 75 million acre-feet of water every ten years, with a safety net in times of drought.

An interesting issue involving the Colorado River Compact is what's going to happen to the lower basin now that Upper basin is developing its full allocation of water.

As far as Powell running low on water, that is true. There are some interesting Sat. photos that show it shrinking. With that being said Mead and Powell are on alternating fill cycles. When Mead needs more water, they let water out of Powell and when Mead has enough we hold the water back.

Unless the Colorado River dries up there will always be water in Powell.

Sorry, I'm a nerd when it comes to Colorado River Compact and I just lectured Randy's under grad class on it, so it's freash on my mind.

Thanks for the information. My knowledge of the area is sad in comparison.

Yeah, it just happens to one of only a few thing I know about. I could not tell you the first thing about cantons or international politics.
