Market for Numbers

I was just reading good ol' Sports Illustrated, and they have a little segment telling why different players choose the numbers they do. The article can be found online here.

I never knew that numbers had been assigned a monetary value (discussion of this in the Odom and Shaq segments), and that there is a market for buying certain numbers. I found it interesting.

If I am not mistaken, even Michael Jordan had to pay to wear his number 23 again when he came back to play because it had been retired. It's a strange system, if you ask me. Basketball numbers have changed so much though. It used to be that you couldn't wear any numbers with a digit higher than 5 (easier for the referees to give the numbers to scorers table), but obviously that has changed. I am sure they probably paid money for that too.

I was aware from the book "Moneyball" that there is some sort of mechanism for placing intrinsic value according to particular baseball players abilities, time on the field etc. For those interested in the probability aspect and performance of baseball stemming from one who picks the team without watching them play to keep player stardom down and money in the pockets of the team itself, I would recommend it.
